With its swappable foam layers, Sleeping Duck Mach II is marketed towards couples with different firmness preferences. Is the mattress just a gimmick or is it actually worth buying? I ran it through a series of hands-on, data-backed performance tests to find out.

My experience with the Sleeping Duck Mach II mattress

My favorite aspect of the Sleeping Duck Mach II is the customization system.

If you aren’t happy with the firmness level, you can swap it out until you’re satisfied. That eliminates one of the biggest frustrations when shopping for a mattress online.

The other features of this mattress are really good as well…

Except for one glaring thing.

For a mattress that’s specifically marketed to couples, the motion-isolating capabilities of the Sleeping Duck Mach II leave much to be desired (and I hope the company will address this issue soon).

As for everything else, the Mach II performs well across the board.

Firmness

You can independently customize the firmness level on each side of the mattress.

If you prefer a firm mattress and your husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend prefers a soft one, you can make that happen.

That’s one of the major unique selling points of the Mach II.

There are very few mattresses on the market that let you have different firmness levels within one mattress (the Naturepedic EOS Classic is an example).

Also, since it’s a hybrid mattress with a coil support core, it’s really good for overweight people.

Cooling Test

We rate the Sleeping Duck Mach II a 7.5 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

The Sleeping Duck Mach II slept cool.

I especially liked the cool-to-the-touch bamboo mattress cover.

The Mach II sleeps cool.

If you tend to sleep extremely hot though, you may experience a tiny bit of heat retention from the mattress’ polyfoam layers.

It’s not the most cooling mattress I’ve ever tried, but it’s good enough. I have no problem recommending it to hot sleepers.

Motion Transfer Test

We rate the Sleeping Duck Mach II a 6.5 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

This is where the Sleeping Duck Mach II disappoints.

Motion isolation test on the Sleeping Duck Mach II
Motion isolation is a weak point.

Like I said, for a mattress that’s aimed toward couples, the Sleeping Duck Mach II’s motion isolating capabilities are aggressively mediocre, which I chalk up to the mattress’ bouncier and more responsive nature.

I experienced a good amount of motion transfer when I tried the mattress out with a partner.

Edge Support Test

We rate the Sleeping Duck Mach II an 8.5 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

One thing that I noticed right away are that the mattress’ edge seams are really thick. This helps provide structure to the perimeter of the mattress and makes it so that it doesn’t sag as easily.

It’s also built with reinforced edge coils, which makes it even more supportive.

Overall, I was actually really impressed with the edge support on the Mach II. If you’ve read any of my other reviews, you know that I have high standards when it comes to edge support and am frustrated by most brands, who tend to treat this feature as an afterthought.

Just by sitting down on the Mach II, you can tell that Sleeping Duck put a lot of effort into the edge support.

Pressure Relief/Relief Test

We rate the Sleeping Duck Mach II an 8.5 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

While not as compressing as memory foam, I still found the Sleeping Duck Mach II to be extremely pressure-relieving.

My joints felt well-supported when I tried it out.

The Sleeping Duck Mach II also has targeted and zoned support, which means you get extra support in the areas of your body where you need it the most (hips and shoulders).

Construction

There are only three layers to the Sleeping Duck Mach II.

These layers come encased in a removable cool-to-the-touch bamboo cover.

The top comfort layer is made up of polyfoam and provides you with a weightless feel and more responsive support.

The second comfort layer is made up of higher density polyfoam blocks that you can swap out to get your desired firmness level.

The coil unit of the Sleeping Duck Mach II is pretty substantial and is made up of individually-pocketed coils that provide zoned and targeted support.

I did experience some slight off-gassing when I first unboxed the mattress, but it dissipated within 48 hours.

Durability

From what I’ve tried in Sleeping Duck’s product lineup (their military grade steel Indestruct bed to be exact), I can safely say that the Mach II mattress is built to last.

Made from premium and high quality materials that are locally sourced in Australia, the Sleeping Duck Mach II should last you a long time (especially with proper mattress care and maintenance).

You can purchase the Mach II on the official Sleeping Duck website in both the US and Australia.

Conclusion

The Sleeping Duck Mach II is a customizable mattress that allows you to tailor the firmness level to suit your (and your partner’s) needs.

The Sleeping Duck Mach II performs very well in terms of comfort and pressure relief while also providing very good responsive support.

But no mattress is perfect.

Even the best brands all have weak points, and for the Mach II that’s motion isolation. You will feel your partner tossing and turning.

If that doesn’t bother you, I think you’ll be very happy with this mattress. It’s well-made and feels expensive.

It should last you at least 10 years (and will be comfortable the whole time).
